Constant shaving and waxing can be time-consuming and irritating for the skin, which is why many people opt for laser hair removal. During an appointment, the applicator directs pulses of light in a constant sweeping motion. This puts the hair follicles in a state of dormancy, stopping new growth from developing for a prolonged period. To ensure the procedure goes smoothly and you heal properly, below are skincare tips for before and after the appointment.

Steps to Take Before the Appointment

Laser hair removal takes place in a series of sessions. A doctor will advise you to stop activities that could alter your hair follicles.

You should also stop waxing and using other hair removal methods a few weeks prior to the treatment. However, it’s okay to shave the day before the appointment, as making the hair a bit shorter will minimize the risk of skin irritation.

Care Advice for After the Procedure

After laser hair removal, you might feel a bit of irritation. When you get home, applying cold compresses to the treatment areas will ease any swelling and soothe your skin. The doctor might also recommend using hydrocortisone or another steroidal cream to reduce inflammation.

Continue to limit sun exposure for six weeks after each session. Stay out of pools and hot tubs for at least three days after the procedure, as the water-treatment chemicals could irritate your sensitive skin.
