You may choose to continue your education for a variety of reasons: to increase your pay potential, to further your career training, to learn more, or to find a new vocation. Before you enroll, you should consider the affordability for furthering your schooling and submit the FAFSA® form to see if you can receive funding.

What Is It?

Prospective and current students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form annually to secure financial aid to further their education or gain career training. It’s used to determine your eligibility for grants, scholarships, student loans, and other forms of financial aid. Submitting the form is free, and easy access to tax information from a previous year’s application is available online.

Why Should You Fill It Out?

If you’re planning to enroll in a post-secondary institution, submitting a FAFSA form is one of the first steps you need to take. It applies not only to two- and four-year colleges and graduate programs but also to career, trade, and technical schools.

The FAFSA is required to receive financial aid. If you don’t fill it out, you won’t be eligible for most types of free or low-cost aid. On average, it takes only 30 minutes to complete. Because not all aid is based on need, anyone looking to further their education should complete the form.

For Ohio residents, the FAFSA is due by midnight on October 1, 2020, for the 2020-2021 academic year. The federal deadline is later: 11:59 p.m. Central time on June 30, 2021.

It may seem as though you have plenty of time to apply for aid. However, a lot of aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you can submit it, the better off you will be.

To complete the FAFSA form, gather required documentation, including past tax returns and additional information of your financial standing. According to the official FAFSA website, you should also create an FSA ID as early as possible and register with the site to submit an online application. This is the fastest submission route, although a paper option is available.

Contact the financial aid office at the educational institutions you wish to attend for assistance.
