Deciding upon an assisted living community that is the right fit can be challenging. From the staff to the amenities, you want to ensure comfort and hopefulness during this important transition, so visiting communities is essential. To narrow down the options in your area, keep the following tips in mind to get the best information possible from your tours.

How to Tour an Assisted Living Community

1. Go During Social Events

Schedule your tour while a community event is occurring. Encourage your parent to participate, if possible. This will help both of you get an idea of how much your loved one would enjoy themselves there. If possible, stay for a meal as well.

2. Keep Health & Safety in Mind

It’s important that the environment is well maintained – look for general cleanliness, and note any strange scents pervading the assisted living community.

Ask about health and wellness services. Ask about nursing services, medication administration, pharmacy service, physical therapy, and nurse practitioner services. Assisted living providers work with medical professionals to provide many of these services on-site.

3. Observe the Staff & Residents

4. Look at Everything

Although it’s fine to follow an employee on a guided tour, take some time to explore the assisted living community independently as well. Make sure it has common areas that are important to your parent, such as a library, recreation/activity room, or outdoor areas. Soak in the atmosphere to determine if the community feels welcoming and comfortable.

5. Ask About Policies & Rules

It’s important for your parent to get out of the community sometimes, so ask how or when they arrange transportation and what events and clubs are in the area. Ask about the visitor policy and resident rights.  Ask about the resident rules so that you understand what is permitted and not permitted in a congregate care setting.
