Neutering your new dog may not be high on your list of fun things to do together, but it’s an important decision. In many ways, it can help your pup live a fuller and happier life. The best way to ensure that you make a fully informed decision is by learning more about the procedure.

The Benefits of Neutering

Perhaps the foremost and most apparent advantage of neutering is that your dog won’t be able to procreate and contribute to pet overpopulation in the United States.

Neutering is also helpful for you and your dog. With reduced levels of testosterone in his system, he’ll be less aggressive and determined to mark his territory by urinating. Since he won’t experience as much desire to mate afterward, he’ll be less prone to wandering far from home to find a female in heat — roaming that could place him at risk of being injured by cars or fights with wild animals. Additionally, he’ll be safe from prostate or testicular cancers or infections later in life.

On top of saving you money on healthcare as your dog ages, neutering also makes it cheaper to renew your pet license when the time comes.

What to Expect Before & After

neuteringThe veterinarian will probably run some tests on your furry friend’s blood before approving him for pet surgery of any kind to check that he’s healthy enough for it.

Afterward, it may take a couple of weeks for your dog to fully heal. He might be lethargic and too nauseated to eat for the first couple of days, or he might want to return to his normal level of energy rather quickly. If the latter, you’ll need to keep him calm and encourage him to rest in a quiet place in your home so that his stitches don’t open. Depending on the stitches used, they may come out on their own, but if not, the veterinarian will let you know how to remove them after seven to 10 days have passed. Avoid bathing him during that time.

Your dog may also lick his swollen scrotum repeatedly, in which case you’ll need to place a cone over his head. Don’t be alarmed if there’s some bruising around the surgery site, as that is normal, but let the veterinarian know right away if you notice discharge from it.
