You rely on your generator to work when you need it most, especially during a blackout due to a strong storm or an electric overload. This is why you should test it regularly, even if you don’t use it often. If it doesn’t turn on, you can troubleshoot the most common issues to get it running smoothly in no time.

Why Your Generator May Not Start

1. Bad Spark Plug

The spark plug can get a buildup on it over time that will prevent it from working. Remove the plug to look for deposits. If it looks clean, place it back in and use a spark plug tester. When you crank the generator, you should see a spark between the tester’s terminal. Lack of a spark indicates that it needs to be replaced.

2. Low Oil Levels

Willington generatorMost generators are equipped with an oil-level sensor that will prevent it from starting if the level is too low. First, check that you have it on a leveled surface, as uneven surfaces could cause the sensor to trigger low oil levels, even if there is enough. Check the oil in the crank case and add more if needed.

3. Clogged Carburetor

It’s common for the carburetor to get clogged when the machine has spent a long time in storage. Shut off the fuel valve and open the drain at the bottom of the carburetor’s bowl. If the fuel doesn’t drain out, use a carburetor cleaner and a needle to clean the main jet. Next time you store the generator, drain out the gas tank and the carburetor bowl beforehand to prevent future clogs.

4. Faulty Safety Switch

The safety switch, or interlock switch, allows you to power devices on your circuit breaker panel. It protects your devices from getting fried. Test the switch with a multimeter. If it’s defective, it can easily be replaced. Never connect your generator directly to the panel without the switch, as this is dangerous.
