Young children in preschool learn how to make friends and communicate with others for a successful foundation for their schooling. However, it’s crucial for children to learn how to share with others, as this act fosters empathy and caring. If your little one isn’t sharing their toys with others, try implementing the tips below to help them become more familiar and comfortable with the act.

How to Teach Your Toddler to Share

1. Be Patient With Them

Children younger than 2 years old do not have the understanding or empathy needed to grasp the concept of sharing. However, 3- and 4-year-olds can begin to empathize and share their toys with the right encouragement from their parents or preschool teachers. Practice sharing at home by passing a favorite toy back and forth between family members, noting “My turn” and “Your turn.”

2. Don’t Force It

preschoolWhen parents try to force the issue by taking away a child’s prized toys or otherwise punishing them for not sharing, the child can associate negative experiences with sharing, which encourages them to do the opposite. Children will learn the consequences of their behavior toward others as they age. If other kids stop playing with your little one because they won’t share, they’ll eventually realize that sharing strengthens friendships.

3. Reward Positive Sharing Behavior

When activities are fun, children are more likely to want to repeat them. Schedule play dates with other kids, and encourage sharing by giving your child a treat with the request, “Please give half to your friend.”  When your little one abides, praise them and ask, “Did you see how happy that made your friend?”
