When it’s time for a new lawn, homeowners are faced with the choice of either seed or sod. Which one is best for your landscaping project depends on a few factors, including time and money. Both provide stellar results for lush, vibrant lawns, so become familiar with the pros and cons of each before getting started.

Seeding

Grass seeding puts you in charge of your landscaping project. After spreading the seeds, you’ll see the progress from germination to a lush green lawn filling your yard over a few months. Purchasing premium grass seed is not that expensive, and you’ll have a wide variety of grasses to choose from. Seeding also means your lawn will have a healthier, deeper root system than other methods.

landscapingUsing seeds also means planting them during the right growing season. Early fall is the best time to plant to avoid damage from insects and invasive weeds. Newly seeded lawns also require daily watering for the first week or so. Seedlings can take a few weeks to a few months to fully set, and an entire growing season is needed to establish thick growth.

Sodding

If you want immediate results, fresh sod will give you instant gratification. Because the new grass is pre-grown and harvested by a farmer, it can be installed any time during the growing season. Once fitted and laid into your landscaping, sod only takes a few weeks to root. The carpeted nature of sod makes it difficult for weeds to grow because they’re covered entirely and can’t access any light.

With its quick turnaround time, sod can cost a little more. It also must be laid soon after harvesting, or it will dry out and die. Sod is offered in fewer grass varieties than seed. Additionally, sod prefers sunny yards, so if it’s shaded, it may struggle.
