How many times did you visit the dentist in 2019? If you missed one, or even both of your cleanings, it's not too late to start the new year off right. Schedule an appointment as soon as your calendar allows, and make the following resolutions to ensure a healthy mouth and bright smile all year long.

What Resolutions Will Give You a Healthier Mouth?

1. Quit Your Tobacco Habit

While cigarettes have a reputation for staining teeth, smoking isn't the only threat to oral health. If you use tobacco in any form, you're not doing your smile any favors. Cigars, chewing tobacco, and even smokeless tobacco can all increase the risk of serious health issues, including both periodontal disease and oral cancer. If you have a tobacco habit, try to quit this year, and visit your dentist regularly for oral cancer screenings in the meantime.

2. Eat a Balanced Diet

dentistLosing weight is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions. However, even if you're at a healthy weight, it's still wise to try to eat better in the coming year. Limiting your sugar consumption will reduce your risk of cavities, while eating more fresh fruits and vegetables will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to maintain strong teeth and healthy gums.

3. Floss Daily

If you're not diligent about flossing, make an active effort to be better in the new year. Dentists typically advise their patients to floss at least once a day, so make it part of your bedtime routine and you'll never forget it. If you have trouble handling traditional floss, ask your dentist about the best alternatives.
