Any dermatologist will tell you that once you turn the heat on in your home, your skin will start to dry out. Winter air is lacking the humidity you may be accustomed to the rest of the year. Some people experience such severe dryness that their skin cracks, flakes, or becomes inflamed. However, you don’t have to resign yourself to dry skin all winter. Here are three tactics that will bring some relief.

3 Dermatologist-Recommended Ways to Treat Dry Skin

1. Use a Humidifier

As the outside air gets colder, the humidity drops. This is because cooler air has a lower moisture-carrying capacity. Air at 86 degrees Fahrenheit can hold three times more moisture than 50-degree air. To make matters worse, home heating systems dry out the air, too.

You can fight against the dry air by putting humidifiers in your home. You’ll get more coverage if you place several smaller ones throughout your home compared to one large one in the bedroom. Set these humidifiers to 60%. This should help replenish the top layer of your skin. If you’re still having issues after these are set up for two weeks or so, consider consulting a dermatologist.

2. Choose Soaps Carefully

Use as little soap as possible while still maintaining proper hygiene. You can buy soap-free cleansers that will get you just as clean, but if you want to continue using soap, look for moisturizing and scent-free formulas. They should be free of dyes, perfumes, and alcohol. If you have questions about the best products for you, ask your dermatologist.

dermatologistThis tip applies to bathroom hand soap as well. If your job has a type that makes your hands dry out, don’t be tempted to turn to hand sanitizer. The alcohol in it will dry out your skin even more. Instead, bring a little bottle of trusted soap with you to work.

3. Adjust Your Shower Routine

You might have to bathe differently to get your dry skin under control. Try staying in the water for only five to 10 minutes, as the water strips away your skin’s oily layer, causing you to lose moisture. You should also use lukewarm water—the warmer your bath, the more it strips away your skin’s natural oils.
