Oral cancer refers to abnormal mutations in the cells that make up the lips, tongue, gums, or cheeks. Because early detection can ensure a more promising prognosis, dentists typically check patients for oral cancer at every appointment. Early signs include sores that don't heal, white or reddish patches inside the mouth, loose teeth, and abnormal lumps or growths. While keeping an eye out for these signs is helpful, you should also review certain factors that increase the risk of oral cancer.

What Causes Oral Cancer?

1. Tobacco Use

Using tobacco in virtually any form increases the risk of oral cancer. This includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, and smokeless tobacco. If you currently use tobacco, make an active effort to quit to improve your overall health. There are many ways to do so, including replacement therapies like nicotine gum or patches. Prescription medication is also available. In the meantime, schedule annual oral cancer screenings with your dentist.

2. Human Papillomavirus

dentistHPV is a relatively common sexually transmitted infection. While most people are able to overcome the infection without any treatment, it can persist in some individuals. Certain strains can also cause oropharyngeal cancer, which is cancer affecting the back of the throat. The best way to reduce the risk of HPV-related oral cancer is by practicing safe sex and getting the HPV vaccine.

3. Excessive Sun Exposure

Prolonged sun exposure has been linked to oral cancer. Additionally, excessive exposure to UV lamps, like those found in tanning booths, can also increase the risk of cancer of the lips. To limit your sun exposure, wear layers when the temperature allows, apply sunblock regularly, and use a lip balm that contains SPF.
