A storage unit is an ideal place for keeping belongings you don't need right away, from your collection of action figures to holiday decorations. However, just because you have space doesn't mean you can put everything in it. Many storage companies have restrictions on how the units can be used so, as you start filling up your storage unit, remember to avoid putting any of these items in it.

What Doesn’t Belong In Storage?

1. Anything With a Strong Smell

Any items that have strong odors—pleasant or not—shouldn't go into self-storage, as they can attract pests. It doesn't take long for an infestation to occur, especially if you don't visit your unit often. Also, be sure that anything you put in storage is completely dry, as moisture can lead to mold and mildew.

2. Valuables

Even if the storage provider has top-notch security, there's always a risk that something can go wrong. Unless you can live without the item, don't put it in storage.

3. Firearms & Ammunition

If your rental company allows you to keep guns and ammunition in a storage unit,  it's still usually a better idea to store your weapons in a locked safe or with a local gun range. Fluctuations in temperature can damage these items and create a dangerous situation.

4. Hazardous Materials

Firearms aren't the only potentially handouts items that don't belong in storage. For safety reasons, avoid putting anything corrosive, flammable, or explosive in the unit. Additionally, hazardous materials create health risks and can cause damage, so don't store pool or lawn chemicals, paint, cleaners, fuel, or anything containing fuel, including a lawnmower or snowblower.
