Although getting your permit is an exciting milestone, it's just one step toward a New York driver's license. Before you can take the driving test, you must complete what's known as the five hour class. This course goes over the rules of the road, defensive driving, and how to prepare for an emergency. For a better idea of what to expect, review the guide below.

What Is the Five Hour Class?

Issued by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, the five hour class is available through driving schools, as well as some high schools and colleges throughout the state. The curriculum covers how to drive on highways and city streets, the impact of risk-taking, and how to remain vigilant behind the wheel. After completing the class, you'll receive a pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278), which is needed to schedule and take your road test.

Are There Additional Road Test Requirements?

five hour classCompleting the five hour class will make the roads safer for you and other drivers, but you must also practice driving for a set number of hours before taking your test.

If you're under 18 years old with a learner permit, you must complete 50 hours of supervised practice driving, including 15 hours of nighttime driving and 10 in moderate or heavy traffic. This allows you to practice accelerating, braking, steering, following traffic laws and street signs, and keeping a safe following distance and speed. After completing 50 hours, a parent or guardian must sign a Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262), which must be presented at the time of your road test.
