As winter approaches, you may be considering a new furnace installation to keep your home cozy. When choosing a replacement, think about factors such as system type, size, and price. Also, pay attention to each model’s efficiency rating. If you’re unfamiliar with furnace efficiency ratings, here’s what you should know about them so you can select the best heating system for your household.

A Guide to Furnace Efficiency Ratings

What Are They?

furnace installationIn the United States, each new gas or electric furnace must receive an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating before it debuts in stores. This rating explains the amount of heat it produces compared to the energy needed to produce the heat. The higher the score, the more heat that’s produced compared to the energy required. For instance, a furnace installation with an AFUE rating of 85 uses 85% of its fuel while the remaining 15% becomes exhaust in the flue or chimney.

What Does an Efficiency Rating Tell You About a Furnace?

When you’re searching for a new furnace, a system’s efficiency rating will typically tell you the unit’s ignition system and process for heating the home.

  • Low-Efficiency: A low-efficiency furnace, which has a rating of 56 to 70%, uses a continuous pilot light that you must relight if it goes out. These furnaces are often more than 20 years old and rely on drafts, or rising heat, to circulate warmth.
  • Mid-Efficiency: With ratings between 78 and 83%, mid-efficiency furnaces feature an electronic ignition instead of a pilot light, meaning you don’t have to worry about relighting anything. A mid-efficiency system also contains a fan that controls airflow.
  • High-Efficiency: Furnace installations with ratings between 90 and 98% are considered high-efficiency. This system features sealed-combustion units and two heat exchangers. The condensing flue gases stay in the second exchanger for maximum efficiency.
