If you need engine repair, it’s helpful to give as much information as you can to your auto repair shop. The more you can tell them about what's happening with your car, the easier it will be for them to identify the problem, so familiarize yourself with some of the most common issues ahead of time.

Why Does Your Car Need Engine Repair?

1. The Car Won't Start

In Hawaii's warm climate, you can rule out freezing temperatures as the cause. If you hear the engine clicking but not cranking, you may have a dead battery, which can be resolved with a jump start unless the battery needs replacement.

If you can hear it crank, the problem gets more complicated. It might be a problem with the fuel pump, spark plugs, ignition switch, relays, filters, or cables, but it still helps to tell your mechanic what you ruled out.

2. Overheating

Engine RepairIf you see a the overheating warning light or smoke or vapor escaping the hood, stop the car immediately. You may need towing if the car continues overheating since it's not safe to drive at high temperatures.

The cause can be as simple as low coolant, so check your reservoir. Also, look for leaks, a damaged cap, or a faulty hose. If it’s not one of these problems, you may have a hidden leak, a problem with the fan or thermostat, or an excessively hot temperature outside.

3. Poor Performance

You likely know how often you need to fill your tank. If you find you're using more fuel than usual, something is hurting your efficiency.

Check whether you're due for an oil change. Oil should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to properly lubricate the engine’s parts.

If it's not one of these simple issues, there are a wide range of factors that could be at fault, from a problem with the oil pump to a damaged cylinder.
