How To Cope With Dental Anxiety, Elberta, Alabama

When you struggle with dental anxiety, a simple trip to the dentist can feel very overwhelming. You may find it hard to have your teeth cleaned or repaired, which can complicate your dental health. Fortunately, by understanding how to manage your anxiety and working with your dentist, you could enjoy a healthier smile. Read on to learn more about how to cope with dental anxiety.

3 Tips for Managing Dental Anxiety

1. Identify Your Triggers

dentistSome people struggle with the sounds and smells of the dental office, while others have a hard time laying back in a chair, allowing someone to touch their teeth, and having local anesthetic shots. Think carefully about what your specific triggers are and find ways to suppress them.

For instance, if you have a hard time with the sound of the dental drill, consider bringing along a pair of headphones so you can listen to your favorite music streamed from your smartphone. If you struggle with the smells of the office, rub a small amount of coconut above your upper lip to protect your skin, and then place a little essential oil over that. During the treatment, all you will smell is your favorite oil.

2. Communicate With Your Dentist

Take the time to talk with your dentist about how you are feeling. Only work with a dentist who takes the time to listen to your fears, and who is willing to help you to work through them. Consider establishing a hand motion between you and your dentist so you can signal when you need a break.

3. Bring Support

Think about bringing along a family member or friend who can support you during the visit. Having someone there who can hold your hand or make you laugh can make a big difference. Avoid bringing along anyone who heightens your anxiety levels, even unintentionally. For instance, if you have anxiety, find a babysitter for small children who may struggle to sit still.
