Snow is beautiful, but it can create some dangerous situations during the winter. Freezing temperatures can create slick layers of ice over many surfaces, including your driveway. Prevent slips and falls by following these preventative measures to keep your pavement safe to walk on.

How to Make Your Driveway Slip-Resistant

1. Remove Fresh Snow

drivewayWet or melting snow is a big contributor to ice accumulation. Remove freshly fallen snow before it can stick and freeze to your driveway. If you experience regular snowfall, consider investing in a snowblower or hiring a snow removal professional. This will prevent back pain or injuries after repeatedly shoveling your walkway.

2. Use a Salt-Free Deicer

Applying a deicer to your driveway will lower its freezing point to prevent water and snow from freezing over it. However, avoid using a chloride-based product, as these will damage the asphalt and are harmful to any nearby vegetation.

Instead, look for a salt-free option like calcium magnesium acetate, which is extremely effective in freezing temperatures, won’t harm your driveway or vehicles, and is beneficial for surrounding plant life.

3.  Apply a Slip-Resistant Coating

An effective way to maintain a slip-free walkway is to have a professional paving contractor apply a special coating or sealant over the driveway surface. They’ll apply the material using a squeegee and then sweep over it with a broom to create a gritty texture that offers extra grip when walking over it.
