Whether installing flooring or concrete walls, moisture can be an issue that’s not wholly evident at first glance. If left unchecked, though, moisture in these structures will go on to create many more issues, some of which require extensive repair and remediation. Having a moisture mitigation plan built into the project prevents problems and ensures the client is satisfied at the end of the day.

How Does Moisture Occur?

Moisture can make its way into many surprising places. When installing concrete flooring on new construction sites, moisture can be found within improperly cured slabs. This usually results when the project is under pressure to be completed by a certain deadline as well as being dictated by current weather conditions.  Renovations in existing buildings can have moisture issues as well due to slab age and physical condition.

Moisture mitigation is the process of testing the slab for it’s water content.  Many locations of the same slab should be tested to ensure that the flooring adhesive will not fail.

While it’s best to allow the concrete slab to cure, perform moisture testing, and install a moisture barrier, doing all will ensure that you will not have any flooring warranty issues.

What Are Some Signs That Moisture Is an Issue?

If moisture mitigation wasn’t a flooringpart of the initial design plan, you should still be aware of the common signs of moisture issues. Look for indicators like discoloration, cracks, bubbling, blistering, gaps, joint swelling, and adhesive problems if you’re concerned about moisture ruining your building.

Mold and mildew growth is another serious issue when moisture mitigation is lacking. Mold ruins fixtures, creates foul odors, and can also increase allergy sensitivities in certain individuals. Mold can exacerbate otherwise healthy respiratory systems as well, with such symptoms as sneezing, coughing, congestion, and runny nose.
