When well-maintained, a septic system can last for several decades. Part of this maintenance includes having it pumped at regular intervals. Use this guide to figure out when to schedule septic tank pumping for your home.

When Is Septic Tank Pumping Recommended?

In general, septic systems should be pumped every three to five years. However, this timeline can vary from one property to the next.

The most common way to determine how often to schedule pumping is to factor in the number of people living in the home and the septic tank size. For instance, a 500-gallon tank would need pumping every two to three years in a two-person household, but in a four-person household, it goes up to every year.

The addition of a water leak will cause this number to increase to 200 or more gallons. Using inefficient water fixtures and running multiple water appliances in the same day can also cause this number to go up.

Additionally, if you use a garbage disposal or flush non-waste solids down your drains, sludge and scum layers will accumulate much faster inside the tank.

What Are Some Signs Septic Tank Pumping Is Needed?

When a septic tank gets too full, you’ll usually notice it inside your home. The drains might be slow to empty, and the toilets might not completely flush. If this isn’t corrected, sewage could start to back up in your drains, showers, and toilets.

Outside of the home, you may notice a foul odor whenever the tank is too full or if waste is overflowing from the drainfield. In the latter case, you may see puddles or greener grass around the drainfield as well.
