When the snow starts piling up, the last thing you want is for your snow blower to stop working. With proper care and maintenance, you can rely on the machine to move even the deepest snow, saving you the back-breaking work of shoveling. Scheduling an annual professional service will keep it working for several years, but a few additional simple tasks you can do on your own will help prevent breakdowns.

4 Simple Snow Blower Maintenance Tips

1. Use Fresh Gas

At the end of every snow season, it’s important to drain any remaining fuel from the snowblower to prevent it from getting dirty and damaging the machine’s engine. At the beginning of the season, add fresh fuel to the tank and add a fuel stabilizer to keep it fresh longer, eliminate excess moisture, and prevent clogs in the fuel line.

2. Stock Up On Shear Pins

During an annual service appointment, a technician will check the shear pins that connect the auger to the gearbox, but it’s a good idea to have a few extras on hand as well. Shear pins are designed to break when the auger gets overloaded to protect the machine from more significant damage. Keeping some spares on hand ensures that you can replace them quickly when this happens – without needing to drive to the store in the middle of a storm.

3. Check the Tires

Check the pressure and add air if necessary before using the machine, and be alert to signs of wear. If you use chains on the tires, put them on before the first storm so you are ready to go and won't discover any issues when you can least afford them.

4. Put The Machine Away Properly

Keeping your snow blower in good condition requires properly cleaning and storing it after each use. Before putting the machine away, run it on a flared surface to remove any snow from the surface of the augers, and wipe snow off the chute and housing. Double-check that the bolts and fasteners are secure, and make note of anything that appears damaged or worn, and address those issues before the next storm.
