A root canal is a dental procedure used to salvage teeth that have become severely damaged, decayed, or infected. It consists of removing the affected inner layer of the tooth and cleaning and sealing the outer enamel portion. While your family dentist needs to make the final diagnosis, the following symptoms are signs that you may need a root canal to restore your smile.

How to Tell if You Might Need a Root Canal

1. Tooth Sensitivity

Mild, infrequent sensitivity to hot and cold foods isn’t generally a cause for concern. However, if that sensitivity progresses into a sharp, intense pain, it could be because your tooth is infected. This typically happens when cavities have advanced.

A tooth may also have a damaged root if you experience prolonged sensitivity or pressure in only one area.

2. Chips & Cracks

3. Tooth Decay

Deeply discolored teeth may be experiencing decay. While discoloration can be the result consuming certain foods (including coffee, wine, and soda) or poor oral hygiene, it can also be a sign of nerve and blood vessel damage. This may be accompanied by pain and swollen gums, and should be evaluated by your family dentist.
