The battery charging system is responsible for getting your car started and powering all of its electrical systems when the engine isn’t running. If it stops working correctly, your battery will run out of charge and not be able to replenish the energy. Every driver should know how this system works and when to take it into the auto repair shop for attention.

A Guide to the Battery Charging System

How It Works

Tcincinnati, OH auto repair shophe charging system consists of the alternator, battery, and ECU (wiring and electronic control unit). Older vehicles have regulators, but modern cars have a regulator built into the computer. The regulator is responsible for sensing when the battery needs to be charged. The alternator then uses electromagnetism to produce the current. It moves a magnet past a closed loop of wire to create an AC (alternating current) current, which is turned into a DC (direct current) current to charge the battery. The alternator needs the engine to be running to create its current, so if you’re recharging a dead battery, you will need to let your engine run for at least 15 minutes.

When to Visit the Auto Repair Shop

If something is wrong with your charging system, the engine’s computer may detect it. If it does, you’ll see a warning light on your dashboard, which turns on while the engine is running. This usually says “bat,” “alt,” or “gen.” You may also notice that your battery can’t seem to hold a charge properly. It may have some current, so you can turn on your lights or use the power windows, but won’t produce enough current to start the engine.
