Health conditions, including depression, can impact seniors as they age. Being aware of depression symptoms allows them to find the elderly care they need. Learn more about depression in seniors so that you can find treatment for you or a loved one.

Depression Symptoms

While some seniors may show traditional symptoms of depression like feelings of sadness or despair, depression often manifests differently in seniors. As a result, identifying a depressed senior can be more challenging for family, friends, and even providers of elderly care. Seniors with depression may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Exhaustion
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability
  • Confusion
  • Attention problems

Causes of Depression in Seniors

elderly careSeveral factors can trigger depression in seniors. First, seniors who have dealt with depression earlier in their life or have a genetic history of depression may be more likely to face it again during their golden years. Stress or grief, perhaps triggered by the death of a spouse, can also bring on symptoms of depression.

Health conditions can also lead to depression in seniors. For example, vascular depression is a condition where seniors with cerebrovascular disease are more prone to depression. Other seniors with conditions like diabetes, cancer, or Parkinson’s disease may take medications that cause depression. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also reports that seniors with chronic health conditions are at heightened risk of depression.

Depression Treatment for Seniors

Seniors with depression have several treatment options. Working with their healthcare provider is essential to ensure proper treatment. Often, depression is treated with medication, therapy, or a combination of the two. Seniors can work with their elderly care provider to determine the right combination of treatment and medication dosage to treat their depression effectively. In cases where medication is the trigger, seniors can work with their doctor to find another medication that has fewer side effects.
