Does you tea have a metallic aftertaste? Is there a strange smell coming from your tap? The helpful staff at Luisier Drilling, located in Oconto Falls, WI, can provide some answers as to what could be affecting the taste of your water.

As well drilling specialists who drill more than 600 wells each year, they share the most common culprits:

  • Iron: If your morning coffee tastes unusually harsh, or your cup of tea turns inky and black, you probably have iron in your water. Luckily, this common element isn’t hazardous to your health. In fact, we need iron in our diets. Still, an overabundance of iron in your water makes for unpleasant hydration, as well as frustrating stains on dishes and laundry.
  • Iron Bacteria: Iron is also the favorite food of certain bacteria. After a big meal, these bacteria leave behind reddish-brown or yellow slime that can clog plumbing, corrode pipes, and reduce well yields. Iron bacteria’s signature scent resembles rotten eggs, fuel oil, cucumber or, occasionally, sewage. If you suspect you have iron bacteria, check the water closet tank of your toilet for an oily sheen on the water’s surface or slimy residue in the tank.
  • Sulfur: Opening the tap to a rotten egg smell typically means there’s hydrogen sulfide gas present in your water. While sometimes this is produced by your well’s bedrock, certain bacteria may be to blame. Either way, it’s bad news for your plumbing. Hydrogen sulfide gas can corrode plumbing connections and metal piping, while the bacteria can clog piping and well screens. Sulfur and iron bacteria are easily confused, so you may want to clean your system, seek testing, or call a residential water systems expert for advice.
  • Hardness: Unbearably bitter coffee may need more than cream. An alkali taste in water is a sign of dissolved calcium and magnesium, resulting in hard water. Not a health risk, hard water is more of a nuisance, leaving clothes, dishes, and hair feeling dingy and dirty after washing.
