If you run a business, a storage unit is a safe place to hold your inventory and legal documents. If you’ve never used a unit for this purpose before, you may wonder how to get started. To help you stay organized and streamline the process, here are a few tips to follow.

Do:

Take inventory of items.

storageThere are multiple sizes of storage units to choose from, and taking inventory of your products will help you save money on a unit. Having an accurate list of what’s in storage will also allow you to provide accurate information to your customers about what’s in stock.

Store strategically.

Place items that you’ll frequently need at the front of the unit, and move ones that are less likely to be used or ordered at the back. Take advantage of the vertical space and stack items on top of one another, keeping in mind that heavier boxes should line the bottom.

If you have the extra room, make a pathway down the center so you can access the items at the back without having to move everything.

Don't:

Forget to label your boxes.

The more boxes and bins you have, the more difficult it will be to tell them apart. Labeling takes the stress out of keeping inventory.

Use a permanent marker to identify the contents of each box based on product number or type. You could also organize the boxes into sections based on  purpose or the room they go to, such as “kitchen” or “sports equipment.”

Share your key.

Use your better judgment on this, but it's usually in your best interest to not share your access code or key with anyone except other members of your team. Only give the key to a manager or family member who helps you with your inventory or distribution.
