Scheduling a dental implant appointment is the first step toward a new smile. Implants are an excellent alternative to dentures and bridgework, especially if you have one or more missing teeth. If you have never received this dental solution, the guide below includes details regarding dental implants to help you prepare for your first appointment.

A Guide to Dental Implants

What Are the Different Types?

There are two types of implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. The former is the most common type of implant, with components made of titanium in the shape of a small tube housing your prosthetic tooth. A surgical procedure grafts the implant into your jawbone.

Subperiosteal implants are placed under the gum but above the jawbone. Patients without healthy jaws can opt for this model if they don’t want to undergo a bone augmentation procedure to restore their natural jawline.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

Dental implants typically require multiple appointments. Be prepared for a thorough evaluation process, including a comprehensive dental exam followed by a thorough review of your medical history and, finally, a treatment plan.

After surgery, a process called osseointegration begins, and your jawbone will naturally fuse to the surface of your implant. This process may take several months, but in the meantime, you can have an artificial tooth placed for aesthetics.

Once the healing process is complete, another appointment will place the abutment into the dental implant. The abutment attaches the crown to the implant, this should complete your implant process.  Your dentist will also recommend you wear a night guard to avoid any clenching or grinding pressure on your implant.
