When your dog looks up to beg for some of your dinner, you may find it challenging to refuse. However, sharing certain foods with your furry friend may necessitate an emergency veterinarian visit. To help you keep your beloved companion healthy and safe, here are five foods you should never give your dog.

Everyday Foods That Harm Dogs

1. Nuts

While nuts make a nutritious, filling snack for humans, they can cause trouble for dogs. Since they feature a high amount of fats and oils, nuts may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even pancreatitis in pets. Macadamia nuts are particularly dangerous, often leading to weakness, depression, hyperthermia, and tremors.

2. Grapes & Raisins

Although researchers have yet to discover why, grapes and raisins are highly toxic to dogs, sometimes leading to kidney failure. If your dog eats any grape or raisin, contact your veterinarian immediately. Watch for loss of appetite, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.

3. Chocolate

veterinarianYour veterinarian has probably already warned you about chocolate. However, you cannot overstate the risks it poses. Chocolate contains methylxanthines, a substance that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythm, excessive thirst and urination, panting, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, and death in dogs. Coffee and caffeine can also contain methylxanthines.

4. Onions

While an onion may seem like a harmless vegetable, it is highly dangerous to your furry friend. Onions contain a compound called N-propyl disulfide, which is toxic to dogs. It can cause gastrointestinal problems and damage red blood cells, leading to anemia. Garlic and chives also contain N-propyl disulfide, and you should avoid them as well.

5. Sugar-Free Gum & Candy

Many sugar-free gums, candies, and other products contain an artificial sweeter called xylitol. Since xylitol can cause insulin release, your dog may experience liver failure, brain damage, or seizures after ingesting it. Xylitol is also present in various nut butters, breath mints, and baked goods.
