When you build a custom home, you want to be sure it can accommodate changes in your mobility and health as you age so you can remain safely in your space for many years to come. Even if you're active and in great shape, there are a few features that you should consider adding to your new home construction now to help you age in place comfortably.

Custom Home Features for Seniors

1. One Level

Multi-level homes can be tricky when mobility is compromised. Create a single-level design for your new home construction, so everything you need is easily accessible on the ground floor. If you do choose a layout with different stories, include an elevator to get to the higher levels.

2. Wide Hallways

Construct hallways to be as wide and unobstructed as possible for your design. Opt for at least 40 inches, so walkers, wheelchairs, and other devices can move freely. Also, ensure the layout isn't too complicated or filled with tight corners and twists and turns. Open floor plans are best for navigating each area.

3. Walk-In Showers

4. Low Maintenance Materials

When selecting materials, opt for those that are easy to maintain. In the kitchen, natural stone is excellent if you keep up with sealing, or you can choose quartz, which is less porous. Additionally, select matte stainless steel appliances that offer the same luxury without smudges. For flooring, avoid wall-to-wall carpeting that requires regular vacuuming and go for hardwood.

5. Lower Storage

To prevent the need to bend down or reach up with a step stool, lower the cabinets and other storage areas to comfortable heights. Ask your home builder to add pull-out shelving to capture the look of deep shelves without the difficulty. Also, design counters at different heights, so you have the option to stand or sit while you cook.
