If you live in Hawaii’s warm climate, a well-functioning air conditioner is an essential part of your everyday life. If it’s time to install a new unit, here are three preparation steps to smooth the installation process.

How to Prepare for a New Air Conditioning Unit

1. Select the Right Model

Before installing a new air conditioner, you need to choose the right model for your home. If you choose one that is too powerful, you’ll end up with higher than necessary energy bills. If you choose one that isn’t powerful enough, your interior temperature may not be comfortably regulated.

The Department of Energy once recommended selecting a model that provides 12,000 BTUs per 500 sq. ft. However, this didn’t account for insulation and climate—a well-insulated home may only need half the recommended BTUs. Have a contractor use the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) manual to calculate the unit size your home needs.

2. Clean the Ducts

Air ConditionersYou don’t want leftover dirt and dust to circulate once the new air conditioner is installed, so have your ducts cleaned. Ask the AC installation team to do this for you. According to the EPA, you should also have your ducts cleaned when there are signs of mold or rodents.

3. Give the Crew Plenty of Room to Work

The installation team needs space to carry in the equipment and work, so clear their path and the setup site. Keep any pets out of the way while the technicians are there.
