Aging brings on vision changes that might call for new glasses. A few eye disorders also become more common with age. While scheduling an appointment with your eye doctor will help you avoid issues, there are also some steps you can take to protect your vision.

How to Care for Your Eyes If You’re an Older Adult

1. Watch for Signs of Glaucoma

There are two types of glaucoma. With open-angle glaucoma, the patient will eventually develop blind spots in their peripheral vision. With an angle-closure condition, symptoms include blurred vision, mild headaches, eye pain, and halos around objects.

All forms of glaucoma are discovered by eye doctors during exams, so make sure to schedule these annually.

2. Consider Cataract Treatment

Cataracts are responsible for clouded vision. Initially, you can correct this by changing your prescription for glasses or contacts. As a cataract progresses, you might experience double vision in one eye, sensitivity to light, trouble seeing at night or in low light, and faded colors.

If your cataracts affect your quality of life, consider surgery. This will help you see better and prevent the issue from progressing.

4. Keep Eyes Moist

To stay comfortable, keep your eyes moist with over-the-counter artificial tears. Eye drops are also prescribed for more severe cases.

5. Exercise

Exercise improves circulation, which is a problem for seniors. It also helps prevent obesity and diabetes, which could lead to diabetic retinopathy. No need to do pushups—gentle exercises like walking or yoga will help you reap these benefits.
