Many car owners only take their vehicles in for tune-ups when something goes wrong. However, adhering to a thought-out schedule will keep your vehicle in excellent condition for longer. With the new year coming up, it’s the perfect time to make a resolution to be more organized about when you visit an auto repair shop. Here’s a guide to when you should go for which services.

5,000–7,000 miles

When you’ve driven this much, it’s time for an oil change. Check your Owner’s Manual for the exact recommendation since every vehicle is different. New oil will protect your engine from overwhelming friction and heat to ensure it runs smoothly.

During this tune-up at the auto repair shop, it’s also worth having the technician check out other fluids, like those for the transmission, steering, and wipers.

20,000–30,000 miles

Look at the coolant level as well; it can start to run down, which will allow the engine to run hot and may cause a breakdown or even a fire.

It’s also been long enough that the brake pads deserve a careful inspection. They can start to wear down and won’t be as responsive as you try to stop.

30,000–50,000 miles

At this juncture, it may be time to replace your battery to avoid it running out of power on the road. This is also usually when you should consider swapping in new spark plugs; if they wear down and struggle to ignite the fuel, you may not be able to start the car.

Check on the suspension as well. If it becomes misaligned, you’ll notice your rides become bumpier, and you may have difficulty steering.

60,000–80,000 miles

With so many miles driven, your car may need some replacement parts. You’ll drive safer with new brake pads, brake fluid, radiator hoses, and, depending on the tread depth, tires. The brake pads and fluid will ensure you can have full confidence in stopping the car. The radiator hose will help your engine receive the coolant it needs, preventing overheating. The proper tread on your tires will contribute to better traction and control on the road.
