While a small crack in your windshield may seem like no big deal, ignoring the problem can actually make it worse. Not only can the crack expand over time and make for an unsightly appearance, but it also makes driving your vehicle much more dangerous. If you think your car could use windshield repair, check out the guide below for some important do’s and don’ts of a cracked windshield.

Do:

Study the crack.

Take note of the size and location of the windshield crack. If it appears to be large enough that it could impede your driving or is directly in your line of vision, have it fixed immediately.

Keep it covered.

Windshield repair is made more difficult when the crack is infiltrated by dirt or water. Cover it with a piece of clear tape to keep out any particles. Water can also cause the crack to spread, so refrain from washing your windshield until it’s fixed.

Go to an auto glass specialist.

Don’t:

Ignore the problem.

If you don’t address a crack when it’s small, it will only get bigger over time. Not only can these cracks affect your driving ability, but they can also cost you a lot of money should you end up needing a full windshield replacement.

Mess with the temperature.

If you turn up the air conditioner or leave your car parked in a sunny spot, the extreme temperature shift could cause the crack to spread. Stick with gradual temperature change when driving and try to keep your car covered whenever possible.

Repair when you should replace.

If the crack is bigger than a quarter or exceeds 12 inches in length, the damage is too extreme for windshield repair. Consult a specialist about a full replacement as soon as possible.
