Installing a new HVAC system can make your home more comfortable and provide a substantial return on investment. However, to ensure that these benefits last, installation needs to be prepared for and handled correctly. Working with a professional HVAC contractor will provide a seamless installation process and ensure that your unit is prepared to operate optimally for years to come. Here’s what you can do to prepare for your upcoming HVAC installation.

Do:

Clear the work and installation area.

Traditional forced-air systems are placed outside of homes on level concrete slabs. Ideally, it should be in a shady area and on the side of your home that receives the least amount of sunlight.

Prep the site ahead of time so that the HVAC contractor won’t have to deal with cleaning the area. Trim back shrubs and overhanging tree branches and cut overgrown grass. Move any lawn fixtures, and make sure there’s a clear path running from the driveway to the area. If the area is near a neighbor’s window, let them know when the contractors will be there so they won’t be caught off guard by the work going on outside of their home.

Choose the right unit size.

With residential HVAC units, bigger may seem better. However, oversized units can increase utility costs because they’ll turn on and off more than they need to.

hvac-contractor Chattanooga, TNChoose the right unit by determining the BTUs (British Thermal Units) that the system requires. This measurement determines how much power is needed per hour to cool outside air. 20 BTUs should be dedicated to each square foot inside a home. A 500 square foot bedroom will require 10,000 BTUs, but be sure to consult with an HVAC contractor if you need help determining the correct size.

Don’t:

Forget to clean the ductwork.

Dust, dirt, and other debris collect in ductwork over time and will taint the air quality in your home. Blockages will also interfere with airflow and reduce your system’s efficiency. Before you install your new unit, schedule a duct cleaning. Professionals will use high-powered vacuum hoses to remove debris deep in your system before and after installation.

Leave debris around the unit.

Make sure to clean up around the unit after it’s installed and periodically throughout the year. Remove any plastic packaging or leftover materials that may get sucked into the unit or caught in the condenser. Continue trimming back foliage and pressure-washing the concrete foundation. It’s best to leave at least 3 feet of clear space around each side of the unit, so nothing damages it.
