Apple® products are known for their cutting-edge technology and user experience. But like any technological device, they’re not flawless. Fortunately, many problems, including some battery issues, can be solved with a few easy adjustments. Here are the answers to four common questions about new and used Apple® product batteries.

4 Questions About Apple® Batteries

How Can I Maximize Performance?

In addition to reducing the number of programs and apps running on your system, dimming the screen can also make your battery last longer. Using Wi-Fi instead of data on your phone can also help. Check your settings to see what apps and functions use the most battery life. If certain apps are using battery power regularly to refresh in the background, you can turn off “Background App Refresh” in the General Settings tab of your iOS devices. One of the easiest ways to prolong battery charge in new and used Apple® products is to enable Low Power Mode, a feature introduced with iOS 9. This mode can be switched on when your device gets down to a 20% charge, with another reminder at 10%.

Why Does My iPhone® Battery Charge Slowly After 80%?

Used-Apple-ProductsEach iPhone® uses a lithium-ion battery that recharges in two stages. The first stage operates at a high current, which is why you’ll notice it charge quickly up to 80%. Once it is 80% charged, it switches to a lower current to reduce electrical strain and prolong the device’s lifespan.

How Do Environmental Conditions Affect the Battery?

Apple batteries are designed to be capable of performing well in a range of ambient temperatures between approximately 32 and 95 degrees. Its ideal range is 62 to 72 degrees, or average room temperature. Colder temperatures may sap the battery, but extreme heat (like being locked in a hot car) can cause permanent damage. Also avoid charging it in a hot environment, as this can compound the issue.

Why Won’t My Device Hold a Charge?

If your device isn’t holding a charge, it is most likely because the battery has been damaged or is wearing out. The average Apple® device battery can be charged 400 times. For most people, this equates to two years of use. After this point, you should consider having the battery replaced if you find yourself having to charge your phone more frequently. If the battery won’t charge at all, ensure the connection to the charging port is firm and try a different charging cable (those wear out as well).  A broken charging port is rare, debris stuck inside the port is very common.  Bring it to a repair shop for a quick clean out; they’ll know how to clean it without damaging the port.
