During the winter, you want your home to be warm and cozy. However, it can be stressful if your heater suddenly stops working. Fortunately, while you wait for the heat to be restored, you can stay safe and warm by following these five tips.

How to Stay Warm Without Your Heater

1. Wear Layers

Insulate your body by layering clothing. Wear a couple of sweaters, a few pairs of socks, and thermal underwear if you have it. You can add a hat and scarf if you’re still cold. By adding or removing these layers throughout the day, you can better regulate your body temperature.

2. Use the Oven

If it’s time for lunch or dinner, consider cooking with the oven, as it will produce heat that can warm up your home. Have your family gather in the kitchen to enjoy the extra warmth and leave the oven door open after you’ve turned it off to continue heating the area.

3. Drink Hot Liquids

heaterHeat up by drinking hot liquids such as coffee, tea, cider, and hot chocolate. You can also hold a bowl of soup or sip on tea throughout the day to keep your hands toasty.

4. Stay Active

When the cold starts to hit you, get moving. Even something as simple as a few minutes of jumping jacks will warm you up quickly. If you have children, play high-energy games such as Simon Says or musical chairs.

5. Huddle in One Room

On particularly chilly days, gather all household members in a small room, preferably without too many windows. Cover the vents and shut the door. Everyone will benefit from the body heat, especially if you select a room on the south side of the home that the sun heats naturally.
