December is the perfect time for self-reflection because a clean slate is just around the corner. With the new year fast approaching, it’s wise to take some time off from your practice and work on self-growth. From attending a holistic workshop to undergoing business coaching, you can make the most of this clean slate by committing to one—or more—of these resolutions.

3 Resolutions All Physicians Should Make

1. Attend a Holistic Workshop

If you primarily provide conventional care, but you've been wanting to incorporate alternative therapies into your scope of practice, start by attending a holistic workshop. A more general workshop will address the basics of considering the whole person—mind, spirit, and body—when diagnosing and treating patients. If you happen to come across a particular specialty that interests you, you can pursue it by enrolling in additional courses. For example, if you’re a rheumatologist, your patients might benefit from nutritional counseling because diet can have a big impact on inflammation. If you’re an orthopedist, on the other hand, patients might achieve faster relief with complementary therapies like massage therapy or spinal adjustments.

2. Undergo Business Coaching

holistic workshopIf you dream of running your own practice someday, why not take tangible steps toward doing so during the New Year? Enrolling in a business workshop is a great place to start. A comprehensive course will address the pillars of running a successful medical clinic, from working with insurance providers to implementing marketing initiatives that will attract new patients. Once you’re ready to branch out on your own, consider signing up for one-on-one business coaching. During these sessions, you’ll learn how to streamline operations so you can spend less time on administrative tasks and more time caring for patients.

3. Prioritize Continuing Education

Excluding infection control training every four years, New York physicians are not required to complete continuing education in order to maintain their licenses. As such, those who complete coursework or attend seminars can quickly become leaders in their respective fields. If you practice pediatric medicine, for example, attending a seminar on vaccines will provide actionable tips for educating parents on the importance of vaccinating their children.

Networking with other clinicians is another effective resolution for physicians. To connect with others, turn to Metro Collaborative. Based in New York City, this healthcare networking group hosts intimate peer-to-peer dinners, holistic workshops, and yoga retreats. They also provide business coaching services for those in private practice. To learn more about all their networking opportunities, visit their website or call (609) 876-9163.
