During the winter, your deck won't be used as often as at other times of the year. But less use doesn't mean that a deck shouldn't be maintained throughout the season. Snow, ice, and strong winds can cause extensive damage. Here are a few tips for caring for your deck installation this winter.

How to Care for a Deck in Winter

1. Clear It Off Regularly

Whenever there’s sizeable snow accumulation, be sure to shovel your deck as you would the driveway. If left untended, snow will build up and place excess weight on the deck, leading to sagging, weak spots, and broken boards. Also, keep an eye out for tree branches or limbs that may have broken off; these can also produce cracks and breaks in the surface.

2. Use Deicers With Caution

deck installationsMany deicing products are harmful to deck materials. Salt, sand, and cat litter can scratch and scrape, and many commercial deicers contain chemicals and colorants that damage surfaces and leave stains behind. Also, using a metal shovel to chip away ice can easily result in nicks and gouges in the deck. The best option is to use a plastic shovel to gently break up the ice. Consult your deck installation provider for specific deicing products for your particular type of decking.

3. Apply Sealant

Apply a water-repellent finish to the surface of your deck. This will protect against rain, snow, and sleet and seal the deck from rot and decay. In general, the sealant should be applied every two to three years for maximum protection.
