Laser therapy is a form of physical therapy that uses cold lasers to provide fast pain relief to patients. It can be administered on its own or with more traditional forms of treatment to reduce recovery time and help you get back on your feet sooner. Learn the answers to a few of the most frequently asked questions about this treatment option to help determine if it’s right for you.

What to Know About Laser Therapy

Why should I choose it?

Laser therapy offers immediate pain relief to most patients without the risks or side effects of surgery or drugs. Depending on your particular case, it can be equal to or more effective than other types of rehabilitation. The sessions are also about 10 minutes each, meaning that it requires less time to get the necessary pain relief.

How does it work?

laser therapyThrough a photochemical process, laser therapy photons increase your cells’ ability to remove waste and toxins and take in oxygen and nutrients. You experience a decrease in pain, swelling, and inflammation because the laser increases the permeability of your cells. It also accelerates healing by enticing your cells to produce Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).

What does it feel like?

Laser therapy doesn’t hurt. Many people don’t feel anything at all during treatments except for mild warmth. Remember that between 6 to 24 hours after the session, you may feel pain in the treatment area as the healing process begins. This is more common with chronic conditions or those involving sensitized nerves. Typically, the pain subsides after a few days.

What conditions can you treat with lasers?

Many of the same conditions treated with traditional physical therapy methods also benefit from laser therapy sessions. Talk to your physical therapist about this treatment option if you have pain in your neck, lower back, hips, hands, feet, or shoulders. It may also help those with chronic conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines, or inflammatory conditions.
