Whether you receive a flower arrangement as a gift or purchase one for yourself, you want to do everything possible to prolong its life. Although regular feeding and watering are essential, there are several other steps that may help those beautiful blooms last longer. Here are three suggestions to keep in mind.

How to Help Your Flowers Last Longer

1. Begin With Vinegar & Sugar

Start by putting your flower arrangement in a vase with a quart of warm water. Add two tablespoons of sugar; it will stimulate the blossoms to open and keep them fresh. Then, stir inside two tablespoons of white vinegar to minimize bacterial growth. Snip away any leaves that touch the water, and be sure to replace the water and sugar-vinegar concoction at least every two days to keep the flowers as fresh and healthy as possible.

2. Cut the Stems at an Angle

Cut half an inch to an inch each time and trim discolored or damaged areas as well. Additionally, cut any leaves that might enter the water after you trim to prevent cloudy water.

3. Avoid Areas of Greater Warmth

It’s best to keep your flowers away from heat to protect the integrity of the petals. That includes windows, where they’re more likely to be damaged by potent ultraviolet rays during the day. Avoid placing your arrangement near a fireplace, a space heater, or an air vent, too. Instead, place them in a relatively cool location such as the living room counter.
