What you eat can impact every aspect of your health, including your eyes. Since your vision requires nutrients to function properly, comprehensive eye care extends beyond an annual visit to the optometrist. Here are a few foods you should consider incorporating into your diet to maintain your overall ocular health.

5 Foods That Can Help Improve Your Vision

1. Eggs

Eggs are packed with two nutrients that help reduce the risk of retinal damage—lutein and zeaxanthin. These antioxidants, which are found naturally within the eye, are known to neutralize free radicals and slow the progression of macular degeneration, including the development of cataracts.

2. Fish

Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for healthy eye care development and retina function. In fact, according to the American Optometric Association, eye issues such as dry eye and age-related macular degeneration and have been associated with low levels of omega-3.

3. Nuts

Almonds contain vitamin E, which is known to protect the cells of the eyes from age-related macular degeneration and the development of cataracts. Other nuts and seeds that contain vitamin E and are good for eye care include sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, and peanuts.

4. Carrots

Kentucky eye careCarrots are loaded with beta-carotene and vitamin A, which are another two nutrients essential for eye health. They help your body synthesize a protein called rhodopsin, which helps your eyes adjust to the dark and see better at night. Carrots are also high in lutein, which may help prevent age-related macular degeneration.

5. Leafy Greens

Lutein and zeaxanthin—the eye-saving nutrients in eggs—can also be found in many leafy greens, including kale, spinach, and collard greens. These greens also contain a hefty amount of vitamin C, which can slow the progression of macular degeneration and reduce the risk of certain types of cataracts.
