Like any piece of mechanical equipment, power wheelchairs and scooters require periodic maintenance. Otherwise, the device may break down at the most inopportune time, and it may or may not be repairable. Thankfully, you can ensure the longevity of your mobility aid by following these simple tips.

3 Maintenance Tips for Power Wheelchairs

1. Charge the Battery as Instructed

Every power wheelchair and scooter comes with specific instructions for maintaining battery life. Generally, users are advised to charge the battery frequently—every night while they sleep, for example—and to allow for a full 24-hour charging cycle once a week. The precise guidelines you should follow, though, will depend on the model you buy and the type of battery that it uses. Following all charging instructions will extend the duration of each power cycle and the lifetime of the battery.

2. Inspect the Tires Often

A fully charged power wheelchair or scooter will be of no use to you if its tires are flat or bald. If your device has pneumatic tires, check their pressure frequently.  If your device has solid tires, examine the tires’ treads for excessive wear and tear. Failing to replace worn tires will affect the traction of the wheelchair and compromise your safety.

3. Clean the External Components

After disconnecting the chair from its base and removing the battery from the chair, use warm, soapy water to wipe down all surfaces. With a toothbrush, scrub the area around the joystick gently, and then dry everything thoroughly. Finally, use compressed air to eliminate dust near the battery and other electrical components.
