4 Tips for Maintaining Older Plumbing, Kalispell, Montana

If you live in an older home, you probably have older plumbing. While most outdated pipes are still safe to use, they do require a bit more attention than newer ones. Here are some steps you can take to extend the life of your pipes.

How to Keep Your Older Plumbing in Good Shape

1. Check for Leaks Regularly

Even a tiny leak in one of your pipes could lead to water damage. Watch for dripping faucets, warped walls or flooring, or stains on your ceiling. If you see these problems, call a plumber immediately. They may have to repair or replace some of your pipes.

2. Know How to Shut Your Water Off

Older pipes are more likely to malfunction. In case one bursts, you need to know how to turn the water off.

An older home might not have easily accessible shut-off and sewer valves. If you can’t find them in the basement or utility area, ask your plumber for their location.

3. Keep Your Pipes from Freezing

plumbingWinter is a dangerous time for older plumbing. This is because cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and then burst.

Keep your thermostat above 55 degrees at all times, even when you go on vacation. When it gets cold, open up the cabinet under the sink to let heated air circulate around the pipes. You can also have a plumber install insulation around your piping to keep it safe year-round.

4. Avoid Drain Cleaners

When a drain gets clogged, many people use liquid drain cleaners. This practice isn’t healthy for any pipes, but can spell even more trouble for older plumbing. This is because the chemicals in these products cause corrosion on materials that aren’t plastic, which applies to the vast majority of older pipes.

Instead of using a drain cleaner, try using a plunger. If this still doesn’t work, call a plumber to address the problem with a snake.
