When a loved one is undergoing treatment for cancer, it’s easy to feel helpless. You might not know what to say or do, and it may be difficult to reach out. Although every relationship is different, providing emotional support is important to help your loved one maintain a positive outlook and a better quality of life. Here are some ways to give them the support they need.

Ideas to Help a Loved One Undergoing Cancer Treatment

1. Bring Gifts

You don’t have to shower your loved one with extravagant gifts during their treatment, but giving them thoughtful tokens to show you’re thinking of them is often appreciated. For instance, warm socks and hats, a pretty scarf, or a cozy blanket can help them stay comfortable. Give them books (or audiobooks), notebooks, or movies to help them stay occupied during treatment. Consider what they go through on an average day, and offer a gift that will make their day easier or brighter.

2. Run Errands

People undergoing cancer treatment often don’t feel well enough to manage all of their errands, so any help you can offer is appreciated. Talk with them to determine what they need; perhaps you can run to the library to return or pick up books or drive their children to sports practices. When you’re picking up dinner for your family, order some extra for them.

3. Check In With Them

cancerSometimes, all someone wants is a friendly voice and the chance to have a conversation about something other than their illness. Make a point of regularly checking in, even if it’s just a quick phone call or text. Allow them to talk about their treatment and their feelings if they want, but also talk about other topics as well—and don't be afraid to laugh and help them relieve stress.

4. Be There

For someone who is housebound or in the hospital, the days can be very long and lonely. Make a point to visit regularly (always calling first to make sure they’re up to it), and make it clear they don’t need to entertain you. In fact, they may just want someone to be there while they rest or watch a movie together. Bring a snack or treat to share, and always start and end the visit with a hug, handshake, or your usual form of physical contact.
