As an expectant mother prepares for the experience of carrying and delivering a child, it’s important not to overlook dental care. Pregnancy presents some unique challenges to the health of their teeth and gums. Below, learn more about these challenges and how to look after your oral health needs during pregnancy.

Periodontal Disease

Up to 75% of pregnant women get gingivitis. This is the earliest stage of periodontal disease, when the gums typically become sensitive, reddened, swollen, and inflamed; bleeding is also common. If it isn't treated, periodontal disease can cause gum tissue to recede, exposing more of the teeth and making them sensitive to hot and cold. In severe cases, less gum tissue will result in teeth that loosen or fall out completely.

Gingivitis can often be reversed with diligent dental care, including brushing and flossing twice daily and routine dentist visits. If it has advanced to periodontal disease, a dentist can perform a deep cleaning on the pockets of the gums, which will remove the harmful bacteria.

Cavities

dentalIt's not unusual for expectant mothers to develop cravings for certain foods. In some instances, these foods may be full of sugar or carbohydrates that stick to the teeth and increase the likelihood of developing cavities. A cavity occurs when plaque buildup eats a tiny hole in a tooth, eventually growing larger and deeper until it jeopardizes the structure of the tooth and the comfort of your mouth.

Again, dedicate yourself to daily dental care and minimizing your intake of sweets and overly starchy foods.

Enamel Erosion

Enamel erosion is a concern for mothers-to-be who are struggling with morning sickness. The acidic content of vomit and stomach bile can eat away at the protective enamel coating of the teeth; it can also disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the mouth and cause bad breath. To avoid these possibilities, brush your teeth after any bouts of morning sickness. If you're too unwell to brush, aim to rinse with mouthwash or a few mouthfuls of fresh water.
