Propane is a plentiful gas that’s typically used to heat homes and operate gas-powered grills. Because of its uses, it’s not unusual to keep small propane tanks on your property until they’re needed, but putting them in the wrong location can be dangerous. To learn more about how to safely store and maintain your propane cylinders, consult the brief guide below.

Transporting

Whenever you are bringing a propane cylinder home, it must remain in the upright position in your car to protect the container from punctures and other damages. You should always ensure the valve is completely shut so that the gas doesn’t leak.

Storing

After you purchase your propane tank and bring it home, it needs to be stored in a safe place. While it may be tempting to put it inside a garage or shed, propane cylinders must remain outdoors in the upright position where it has adequate ventilation.

Ideally, you should store the container in a shaded area so that it doesn’t exceed over 120 degrees. At that temperature, the pressure inside the tank rises, and it becomes more susceptible to gas leaks and combustions. Your storage location should be at least 10 feet away from flammable materials or open flames.

Leaks

Leaks are a concern when storing propane tanks. The gas is heavier than air, so it can sink into basements, crawlspaces, and other low spots around the house, which makes it easier to ignite from a flame or spark.

In addition to fires, propane leaks can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. For this reason, the cylinder should be far away from windows, vents, or outdoor HVAC components. If the propane leaks, it could easily infiltrate your home and contaminate the air.
