Maintaining smooth, radiant skin can become complicated with age, and many people turn to Botox® as a solution. Botox resolves wrinkles, age lines, and saggy skin because it prevents overactive muscles from contracting. Surface wrinkles—often around the eyes and on the forehead—can then smooth out. If you’re considering injections, you may have questions about what to expect during your first appointment. Below are all the basics to ensure you go into the procedure confidently and use the proper before- and after-care.

A Guide to Botox Treatment

Before

The ideal candidate for Botox injections should be at least 18 years old and in good health. Those with deep facial scarring, skin disorders, or neuromuscular diseases like multiple sclerosis may experience complications. If you’re unsure whether you’re a good applicant, talk to your skin doctor.

You’ll need to take care of your skin leading up to the procedure. Limit long-term sun exposure and wear an SPF 30 sunscreen every day to prevent burning. Avoid taking over-the-counter aspirin or ibuprofen, and stop taking blood thinners, sleeping aids, and muscle relaxers. These may contribute to bleeding during injections and bruising afterward.

During

botoxBotox is a simple outpatient procedure that takes around 30 minutes. Your cosmetic surgeon will first offer a topical numbing agent, ice, or facial massage to reduce discomfort. They’ll then inject the solution into target areas on your face. Needles are extremely small, and the sensation is often described as a pinch, with the area between your eyebrows being the most sensitive. The actual injections only take a few minutes.

After

Some people experience redness and swelling around the injection site immediately after. This usually stops after 10 minutes. Bruising can occur if you have especially sensitive skin, so avoid rubbing the injection site. You can, however, gently wash your face immediately after the procedure. Avoid exercise for at least 24 hours to prevent bruising. Some studies suggest Botox can move to other parts of the face, so avoid putting pressure on the injection site.

Although you’ll see results within seven days, know that Botox isn’t a permanent solution. Most patients receive new injections every three to four months to preserve results. It’s best to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to determine the best regimen for your needs.
