Your teeth are covered with a hard outer surface called enamel. This protects them from harmful bacteria, decreasing the likelihood of cavities and decay. Unfortunately, certain foods and drinks wear away enamel and put your smile at risk. This is true even if you follow up their consumption with proper teeth cleaning. Avoid the below foods to protect yourself.

A Guide to Foods & Drinks That Damage Enamel

1. Dried Fruits

Chewy dried fruits cling to the surfaces of teeth. Allowing the sugar they contain to remain on the surface attracts bacteria. These bacteria feed on the sugars, subsequently releasing enamel-eroding acids as part of their metabolic process. Opt for a fresh apple instead; biting into one makes for a scrubbing action that cleans teeth.

2. White Bread

Bread contains a lot of starch. As you chew it, your saliva breaks the starch down into sugar. The paste-like substance that results will clink to teeth and attract bacteria that wear away enamel and cause cavities. Instead of white bread, opt for whole wheat, which has less added sugar.

3. Soda

Since saliva helps to balance the pH in your mouth, this can result in an even more acidic environment, further eroding enamel. Opt for plain water or milk instead. The latter contains calcium, which supports strong teeth and bones.

4. Citrus

Lemons, limes, and oranges are full of the acids that wear away enamel. If you must consume these fruits, minimize exposure to acid by sipping water afterward. Don't brush your teeth immediately, however. The enamel will be weakened after the acid exposure, and harsh toothbrush bristles can worsen the damage.

5. Coffee

Coffee contains tannins, which wear down enamel and stain teeth. Beware that if enamel progressively wears away, it may eventually expose the yellow-colored dentin of the tooth underneath. Again, avoid teeth cleaning directly after consumption. Dilute coffee with milk to minimize the impact.
