Flossing is an important part of proper dental care. It helps you access those hard-to-reach places between teeth, removes plaque buildup, and prevents tooth decay and other issues. However, to reap all its benefits, flossing must be done regularly—dentists recommend at least once daily before bed—and with correct form. Below, learn more about why you should floss, how to do it, and common mistakes to avoid.

Benefits

In addition to cleaning the tight spots between teeth, floss can also reach into the gumline and get rid of plaque there. This helps minimize one's risk of developing gum disease, a serious dental problem that can cause the gums to bleed or recede and teeth to loosen or fall out. Also, removing plaque isn't just good for your oral health; it's beneficial for the whole body. The bacteria in plaque can be swallowed, raising one's risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Technique

dentistWaxed and unwaxed floss are equally effective at removing plaque, but waxed is often more comfortable to slide between teeth and comes with less risk of fraying or breaking. Remove about 18 inches of floss and wind the ends around your index fingers until you have about an inch or two stretched between them. Guide the floss between each tooth, using the thumb if necessary, and gently move it up to the gumline. Curve the strand into a C shape against one of the teeth. Then use up-and-down motions to move the floss along the sides of the teeth. Be sure to get into the gumline. Remove the floss, find a clean length of the strand, and go on to the next tooth.

Mistakes to Avoid

Be mindful of how you're flossing. Not paying attention can leave plaque on the teeth, and flossing too intensely can cause bleeding and inflammation of the sensitive gum tissue. Finally, it's better to pull off a longer strand of floss than a shorter one.
