Whether you’re considering replacing your septic tank or trying to decide on your first one, the different options could seem a little overwhelming at first. However, there are distinct advantages to each type that will help you narrow down the best choice for your home or business. A quick breakdown of some of the main kinds will get you started.

5 Kinds of Septic Tanks

1. Conventional

This type of septic tank is usually installed for small businesses and single-family homes. The wastewater is pumped from the septic tank, situated close to the building, through a drainfield of pipes covered in gravel and/or stone trenches; then, it’s deposited into the nearest suitable groundwater source.

Bacteria inside the drainfield consumes the chemical impurities to keep the system working. The main disadvantage of this septic tank is that it’s rather large, so it won’t work well for homes or businesses with small lot sizes.

2. Sand Filter

septic tankWastewater can be transported intermittently through PVC or a concrete container of sand or recirculate through two of them before reaching the drainfield and groundwater. Although this septic tank is more expensive than a conventional one, it’s ideal for homes or businesses that are close to water sources but don’t have much soil.

3. Evapotranspiration

If your home or business is built far from any source of water and in an area that experiences little snow or rainfall, evapotranspiration septic tanks are a creative solution to your problem. With this system, wastewater is deposited into a drainfield that allows it to evaporate through the soil, sand, and grass.

4. Mound

Areas that are shallow or have high groundwater don’t have enough depth for most septic tank systems, which is where mound ones come in handy. A network of pipes filled with sand and/or gravel is placed inside an above-ground drainfield, filtering the wastewater before it joins the groundwater. However, mound systems require large lot sizes.

5. Aerobic Treatment

Fast, efficient, and capable of producing the cleanest results, aerobic treatment septic tanks mimic municipal sewage systems by pumping the wastewater into a tank that uses oxygen to remove pathogens and toxic organic matter. After that, the water is released. This system is highly durable and excellent for small lots, but it requires regular maintenance.
