Applied behavior analysis treatment (ABA therapy) teaches children with autism spectrum disorders, or related developmental disorders, how to develop a variety of skills such as communication, independent living tasks, leisure and social skills. While ABA therapy is considered the gold standard of medically necessary treatment for individuals with autism, ABA therapy can benefit any learner, regardless of diagnosis.

ABA therapy works well for both structured environments, such as school and daycare, and unstructured environments, such as playtime at home. Learn more about ABA therapy and how it can help children with autism learn and thrive to determine if this approach is right for your child.

What Is ABA Therapy?

ABA therapy is a highly tailored therapy, based on the science of learning and behavior. It targets specific actions, giving children the stepping stones to achieve these behaviors with the help of parents, teachers, and caregivers.

What Are the Benefits?

ABA therapyThrough ABA therapy, many children with autism can improve their communication skills, listening skills, and ability to follow directions. At the same time, it can also steer children away from negative behaviors. Finally, the versatile nature of ABA therapy allows parents, teachers, and caregivers to use it collaboratively in any environment, so children can be exposed to it throughout the day.

How Does It Work?

An effective ABA therapy program begins with an assessment performed by a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA), who works with the learner and family to identify the individualized treatment goals. This process typically includes identifying one broad goal that is broken down into smaller, more achievable goals.

Family, teachers, and other caregivers will be guided through ABA therapy and encouraged to give children prompts and assistance. Parents will meet with the BCBA regularly to assess the child’s progress and adjust any prompts or goals as the child develops.
