If you’re moving with fragile items, take a bit of extra time to make sure everything is packed properly before you go. This can save you the headache and heartbreak of finding that your cherished possessions have broken in transit. Use the following guide to pack fragile items such as dishes, mirrors, and decorative glass items before your movers arrive.

How to Pack Fragile Items When You’re Moving

1. Dishes & Glasses

Reduce friction and the chances of breakage when packing your dishes and glassware by wrapping each piece in newspaper before placing it in a box. Fill any empty spaces, including those inside your glasses, with more crumpled newspaper. Store your plates vertically to reduce the exposed surface area. Don’t overpack your boxes — top them with old T-shirts, blankets, or pillows for extra cushioning.

2. Frames & Windows

movingHelp large panes of glass absorb any shock or vibrations that may occur by placing painter’s tape in a star formation across the middle of the pane. Extend the tape to the edges and protect the corners of the frame with foam. If the piece is smaller, you can purchase a specialty corrugated box. Sort these large, fragile items by size and use layers of bubble wrap, foam sheets, or crumpled newspaper in between pieces.

3. Oddly Shaped Pieces

Begin by wrapping it in newspaper and securing the wrapping with tape. Fill any hollow pieces, such as vases, with crumpled newspaper, and add a layer of bubble wrap to the entire piece. If there are any delicate edges or points on the object, cover them with foam. Fill any empty space in the box so your items can’t move around and jostle into each other. Give irreplaceable heirlooms or valuables their own boxes.
